Leo I the Great

Leo I the Great
Pope (q.v.) from 440-461; greatest pope of the fifth century. He championed Orthodox (q.v.) opposition to Nestorianism (q.v.) and defended papal primacy (q.v.). The force of his personality and diplomatic skills were evident at the Council of Chal-cedon (q.v.), also in his negotiations with Attila (q.v.) in 452, and with Petronius Maximus (q.v.) in 455.
